Sad. Of course, all deaths are, and COVID is hardly the only way a teacher can die — still, it feels preventable, even if you know that statistically we are going to lose some of us regardless of what we do. That includes barricading ourselves in our houses.

I can only speak for myself. I’m going back. I’ll be in the classroom, and I’ll be exposed to whatever the kids bring me. I understand the risks, and I’m as prepared for them as I can be. But I’m also lucky, and in a position to choose. Others are not so fortunate, and I feel for them the most.

God help us all.
